As a veterinarian for almost 20 years, I have seen my share of adorable animals. But the Walnut Creek babydoll miniature sheep are some of the cutest and sweetest animals I have ever met.
Baby doll sheep are considered to be one of the oldest breeds of sheep. They originated in England, on the South Down hills of Sussex County. Today, these sheep have grown in numbers in the US thanks to the efforts of Robert Mock. They are popular with spinners and are fun to have as pets because they are less flighty than other sheep breeds. Plus, they have a smile that will always delight. They are smaller in size making them easier to handle and are ideal for children. Because of their size they are excellent to use in 4H projects.
The wool typically runs in the 19-22 micron range. This puts Babydoll fleece in the class of cashmere. It also blends well with other fibers because it has more barbs per inch than any other wool type.
The Babydolls are used as organic weeders in orchards and vineyards because they typically do not harm the fruit, trees or shrubs. They also do an excellent job fertilizing.
They are wonderful companions for other livestock due to their gentle nature. Their calm disposition can be calming for other animals and people too.
The care of Babydoll sheep is similar to other sheep including hoof trimming, worming, vaccinations and regular shearing. Shelter is required for lambing, but otherwise minimal shelters are needed. They are easy to keep fenced in but do need protection from predators. We have portable electric fence to help protect them.
We adore our Babydoll sheep. They are smaller than most sheep so they are easier for us to handle, even the rams. Our children are able to handle them with ease. They do not have horns and are very friendly. The
These personable soft sheep have no horns and are ideal for children who may want to show sheep, enjoy as outdoor pets and /or managing your grass.
Large farms and farmland are slowly disappearing around the world but the rich heritage of these animals combined with the calming and restorative effect they have on people is huge. These sheep are like a natural anti-depressant!
The Walnut Creek Babydoll sheep are also excellent landscapers for wineries and orchards. Babydoll sheep are being used more and more to clear away dead vines and keep orchards clean and vibrant while richly fertilizing the soil. We offer our sheep both for purchase and we also bring them to provide a service of landscaping to areas in VA, NC and DC if you are not interested in purchasing to be a permanent part of your team.
